How to Pack With Packing Cubes for Travel

Knowing how to pack with packing cubes can make it easier to organise clothes and use the space inside your luggage more efficiently.
Instead of searching through your whole suitcase, you can keep similar items together in separate sections. This makes it easier to find what you need without unpacking everything.
Packing cubes work in checked suitcases, carry-on bags, and travel backpacks. The most useful setup depends on the size of your luggage, what you’re bringing, and how often you’ll need to unpack during the trip.
Choosing Packing Cubes for Your Luggage
Look at the size and shape of your suitcase or backpack before deciding how many cubes to take. Several smaller cubes can fit around shoes or a toiletry bag, while a larger cube can hold clothing that takes up more room.
If you’re using several cubes, different colours or mesh panels can make the contents easier to identify. This saves you from opening several cubes to find one item.
Compression packing cubes have an additional zip that reduces the depth of the cube after it’s filled. They can reduce the bulk of soft clothing, but they don’t reduce the weight of what you’re carrying.
Sort Your Clothes Before Packing
Lay out everything you plan to bring before filling the cubes. A travel packing list can help you see what you actually need before you start dividing clothes between different cubes.
Group items in a way that’ll be useful during the trip. You could keep tops in one cube, bottoms in another, and underwear and socks in a smaller cube. Another option is to organise clothes by outfit or by the part of the trip when you’ll need them.
Keep travel documents, medication, chargers, and anything you’ll need during the journey somewhere easy to reach. These items are usually more practical in a separate pocket or near the top of your bag.
How to Pack Clothes in Packing Cubes
Once you’ve decided what belongs in each cube, pack the clothes in a way that keeps the cube easy to close and simple to use during the trip.
Fold or Roll Clothes
Both folding and rolling can work when you pack with packing cubes. Fold structured clothes and items that crease easily. Softer pieces such as T-shirts, leggings, and casual clothing can be rolled when that helps them fit the shape of the cube.
Place the clothes close together rather than leaving large gaps. The cube should be full enough to keep the contents in place without making the zip difficult to close.
Group Similar Items Together
Keeping similar items in the same cube makes them easier to find later. Small cubes are useful for underwear, socks, swimwear, and accessories. Medium and large cubes can hold shirts, trousers, dresses, or extra layers.
For a trip with several stops, you can also organise cubes around different parts of your itinerary. This lets you open the cube you need at each accommodation instead of unpacking the whole suitcase.
Avoid Overfilling the Cubes
Packing more into a cube doesn’t always make better use of the available space. An overfilled cube can become rigid and difficult to arrange beside other items.
Leave enough flexibility for the cube to fit around the shape of your luggage. With compression cubes, close the main zip first and use the compression zip afterwards.
How to Arrange Packing Cubes in a Suitcase
Place the larger filled cubes in the suitcase first, then use smaller cubes to fill the remaining areas.
Try turning a cube if its original position leaves an awkward gap. The aim is to use the available space without forcing every cube into the same orientation.
Shoes, toiletries, and other items that don’t fit inside cubes can go in the spaces around them. Keep heavier items near the wheels. This stops them from pressing down on lighter clothes when the suitcase is standing.
If you’re travelling with carry-on luggage, leave some room for anything you expect to add during the trip. A carry-on packing list can also help you keep essentials within reach without filling every available space.
How to Pack With Packing Cubes in a Backpack
The same basic method works when you pack with packing cubes in a travel backpack. Choose cubes that match the width and depth of the bag rather than trying to force a large suitcase cube into a narrow space.
Place heavier cubes closer to your back if the backpack is designed to carry weight there. Keep items you’ll need during the journey in an accessible compartment or near the opening.
A backpack with several built-in compartments might only need one or two cubes. Use them when they create useful separation rather than adding another organiser to every section.
Do Packing Cubes Save Space?
Standard packing cubes are mainly useful for organisation. Packing cubes keep clothes contained and help you use the space in your luggage more efficiently. However, they don’t automatically make everything smaller.
Compression packing cubes are designed to reduce the depth of the cube after it’s filled. An additional zip compresses the contents and reduces the bulk of soft clothing. This doesn’t reduce the weight of what you’re carrying.
The weight of your clothes doesn’t change when they’re compressed. If your airline has a baggage weight limit, extra room in the bag doesn’t mean you should keep adding more items.
Reducing what you pack is more effective. You can pack light for a trip without relying on compression to create extra space.
Keeping Clean and Worn Clothes Separate
Packing cubes can help keep worn clothes away from clean items as the trip progresses. Leave one cube empty for laundry or use a separate laundry bag instead of mixing everything back together.
On a longer trip, you can move clothes between cubes as you use them. An empty cube takes up very little room at the start and can gradually become your laundry cube later.
If you’re changing accommodation several times, this also means you don’t have to reorganise the entire suitcase at every stop.
When Packing Cubes Are Most Useful
Packing cubes are especially useful when you’re sharing luggage or changing accommodation several times. Different types of clothing can also be kept separate during one trip. Individual cubes make unpacking easier because you can move them directly into a drawer or onto a shelf.
They aren’t essential for every traveller. If you’re taking a small bag for a short trip, several cubes could use space without adding much practical organisation.
Knowing how to pack with packing cubes doesn’t require a complicated system. Give each cube a clear purpose and arrange them to fit your luggage. Keep anything you’ll need during the journey within easy reach.
