Travel Packing List: What to Pack for Any Trip

A travel packing list can make it easier to remember the essentials before you leave.

What you need to pack will depend on where you’re going, how long you’ll be away, and what you plan to do during your trip.

Open suitcase with clothing and travel essentials.

The weather, accommodation, activities, and luggage allowance can also affect what you bring.

A short beach holiday, for example, will require different clothing and essentials from a trip that includes hiking or colder destinations.

Use this list as a general guide, then choose the items that apply to your trip.

Add anything specific to your destination, planned activities, or personal needs, and leave out anything you know you won’t use before you close your suitcase.

Start With the Details of Your Trip

Before choosing clothes or filling your toiletry bag, look at the trip itself. Packing becomes much easier once you know what conditions you are actually preparing for.

This matters even more when your trip includes several stops. My guide to planning a multi-city trip covers how to organise travel days and time between destinations.

Your packing choices should also account for how often you’ll be moving your luggage.

Travel Documents and Money

Keep the documents you need during the journey somewhere secure and easy to reach.

The exact requirements depend on your destination and circumstances, so check official entry information before travelling.

Clothing

Pack clothing around the weather and what you will actually be doing. It is usually more useful to think in outfits and layers than to add individual pieces without a plan.

You don’t need a different outfit for every day. When you’re trying to pack light for a trip, choose clothes that work well together and can be worn more than once.

For longer trips, check whether you’ll have access to laundry. Washing a few items during your stay can reduce the amount of clothing you need to pack.

Shoes

Shoes take up a lot of luggage space. Choose pairs that match your itinerary and the activities you have planned.

Check the surfaces you will be walking on too. Cobblestones, trails, beaches, snow, and long days in cities can require very different footwear.

Toiletries and Personal Care

Bring the personal-care items you use regularly, but check what your accommodation already provides before packing full-size products.

Liquid and container rules can vary by airport, country, and security authority.

The rules can change between trips. Review the current requirements for each airport you’ll be travelling through before you pack.

Medication and Basic Health Items

Pack any medication you need for the trip and check the rules for carrying it across borders. Some medicines that are commonly available in one country may be restricted in another.

Keep essential medication somewhere accessible during the journey rather than packing everything in luggage you may not be able to reach.

Electronics

Think about which devices you’ll actually use during your trip and what you’ll need to keep them charged.

Travelling With a Power Bank

Power banks contain lithium batteries and shouldn’t be packed in checked luggage. Keep yours in your hand luggage and make sure its capacity meets your airline’s requirements.

Restrictions can vary, particularly for larger power banks, so it’s worth confirming the rules before you fly.

Plug Types and Voltage

Plug types and electrical voltage vary between countries. Find out what is used at your destination before choosing a travel adaptor.

A travel adaptor allows your plug to fit a different socket, but it doesn’t necessarily convert the voltage. Make sure your electrical devices are compatible with the local voltage before plugging them in.

What to Keep in Your Hand Luggage

Your hand luggage should contain the things you need during the journey and anything important that would be difficult to replace quickly.

Liquids and Toiletries

Rules for liquids can vary depending on the airport and security system in use.

Before packing, review the current requirements for every airport you’ll pass through, including airports used for connecting flights.

Batteries and Power Banks

Power banks and spare lithium batteries generally need to stay in your hand luggage and shouldn’t be placed in checked baggage.

Airlines may also have limits based on battery capacity, so confirm the requirements for your flight before travelling.

Medication

Keep essential medication somewhere you can reach during the journey. Some countries have restrictions on certain medicines, and you may need a prescription or supporting documentation when travelling with them.

Valuables and Important Documents

Keep your passport, payment cards, travel documents, electronics, and other valuable items with you.

Avoid putting anything difficult or expensive to replace in checked luggage when you can carry it safely in your hand luggage.

Pack for Delays

For longer journeys, consider keeping a few basic personal items and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.

They can be useful during a long delay or when checked luggage doesn’t arrive with you.

Useful Extras for the Trip

Not every trip needs extra travel gear. Add these only when they solve a practical problem for the journey you have planned.

Adjust Your Packing List for the Destination

A general travel packing list covers the basics, but destination-specific items are often the ones that make the biggest difference once you arrive.

Weather and Climate

Look at the expected weather for your travel dates. A tropical destination may require lightweight clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, and rain protection.

Colder destinations may call for thermal layers, waterproof outerwear, and footwear suited to the conditions.

Planned Activities

Think about what you’ll be doing once you arrive. Hiking, swimming, skiing, visiting the beach, attending an event, or spending long days walking around a city may require specific clothing, footwear, or equipment.

Local Customs and Dress Requirements

Some religious sites, communities, and attractions have specific clothing requirements.

Find out what applies at your destination before packing, particularly when your itinerary includes places of worship or locations with a dress code.

Check Your Luggage Before You Leave

Once everything is laid out, go through the list again before putting it into your bag.

This is a good point to remove things that don’t have a clear purpose.

Before You Finish Packing

A useful travel packing list should make packing simpler, not give you more things to carry.

Start with the essentials, then adjust the list around your destination, weather, activities, trip length, and luggage limits.

Do one final check before you leave, especially for your passport or identification, medication, phone, wallet, and travel documents.

Most other forgotten items can be replaced, but these are much harder to deal with once the journey has started.
