Where to Stay in Porto and the Best Hotels by Area
Where to stay in Porto depends mainly on whether you want the upper centre, the Douro riverfront or easier access to western Porto.
Baixa works well for sightseeing and transport, Ribeira keeps you beside the river, while Cedofeita, Boavista and Vila Nova de Gaia suit different priorities.
The main difference between Porto neighbourhoods is elevation as much as distance. Ribeira is beside the Douro, while Aliados, Clérigos, Cedofeita and much of the upper centre are higher.
Check the street and elevation before booking, especially in Ribeira and Gaia, where hotels can be much higher or lower than nearby landmarks.

Stay in Baixa
Baixa is one of the easiest places to use as a base when most of your time will be spent in central Porto. Aliados, Bolhão, Clérigos and São Bento are all close, and the Metro makes airport journeys and longer trips across the city straightforward.
Compared with Ribeira, you start the day higher in the city and avoid making the same uphill return from the river every evening.
Choose Baixa if transport, restaurants and central sightseeing matter more than waking up directly beside the Douro.

It is a good base when the riverfront is an important part of the trip and you want to be able to step outside for an evening walk along the water.
The trade-off is the climb. São Bento, Clérigos and much of the upper centre are above Ribeira, and the shortest route back can include steep streets or steps.
Check the exact hotel entrance before booking if repeated uphill walking is a concern.

The area covers a wider stretch than Baixa, so check the exact address before booking. Properties closer to the lower end of Cedofeita are easy to walk into the centre, while those farther west put you closer to Boavista and Casa da Música.

You will travel more for the historic centre. Metro, buses and taxis make that manageable, but Baixa or Ribeira are better choices if most of the trip is focused on São Bento, Clérigos and the Douro riverfront.

Gaia is not all at river level. Some hotels are beside the waterfront, while others are much higher on the hillside. Check the elevation before booking, especially if you expect to walk back after dinner or a full day in Porto.

Baixa is the easiest all-round base when central sightseeing and transport are the priorities. Ribeira moves you closer to the Douro and the lower historic centre, but you will deal with more uphill walking when returning from the river.
Cedofeita suits travellers who want cafés, independent shops and smaller hotels close to the centre. Boavista is more practical for larger hotels, Serralves and western Porto, while Vila Nova de Gaia makes the most sense when Port wine, river views or a hotel with more facilities matter most.
