A Quiet Safari Escape in Madikwe at Motswiri Lodge

Sunset over the South African bushveld during a safari in Madikwe Game Reserve.

Motswiri Private Safari Lodge is located on the western side of Madikwe Game Reserve, a malaria-free region known for calm game drives and open landscapes. The lodge overlooks a waterhole and is surrounded by trees, creating a quiet and welcoming setting for travellers.

Our stay here added a different dimension to the South Africa itinerary. Madikwe moves at a slower pace. The lodge follows a gentle rhythm with early morning drives, relaxed afternoons, and evenings spent under the stars.

Things to Know Before Staying at Motswiri

1. Early Mornings Are Part of the Experience

Game drives usually start before sunrise. It can feel early at first, but the quiet mornings, soft light, and increased wildlife activity quickly make it worthwhile.

2. Weather Changes Throughout the Day

Temperatures can shift noticeably between morning and afternoon. Dressing in layers helps, as early drives are often cold and the day warms up quickly.

3. Wildlife Sightings Are Never Guaranteed

Guides work hard to track animals, but sightings depend on natural movement. Every drive is different, and even quieter moments are part of what makes safari special.

4. Walks After Dark Are Always Guided

Animals roam freely around the lodge grounds. For safety, staff escort guests to and from their suites after sunset and explain procedures at check-in.

5. Wi-Fi Is Limited

Wi-Fi is usually strongest in the main lodge areas. Limited connectivity makes it easier to slow down, disconnect, and enjoy the surroundings.

6. Drives Can Be Bumpy

Some roads inside the reserve are uneven. Wearing comfortable clothing and bringing a light scarf or jacket makes the drive more comfortable, especially in open vehicles.

7. Plan Your Travel Time Carefully

For guests driving themselves, arriving before reserve gate closing times is essential. Late arrivals may not be permitted entry, so planning ahead avoids unnecessary stress.
