2 Days in the Douro Valley Itinerary
If you’re planning 2 days in the Douro Valley, this route brings together the region’s wine, river scenery and historic towns without cramming too much into each day.
Start in Pinhão on Day 1 with its famous station, a Douro River cruise and a wine tasting at a nearby quinta. On Day 2, follow the N222 towards Peso da Régua before continuing to Lamego, with scenic viewpoints along the way.

How to Use This 2-Day Douro Valley Itinerary
Day 1 keeps things around Pinhão and the river, so you won’t spend unnecessary time crossing between different parts of the valley. Day 2 takes you towards Régua and Lamego, where having a car makes the route much easier.
Book your wine visit first, as many estates have fixed tour and tasting times. Once that’s confirmed, you can plan the river cruise and the rest of Day 1 around it. Leave more flexibility on Day 2 so you’ve got time for stops along the N222 without rushing between viewpoints.
If you’re travelling entirely by train, you can follow Day 1 with very few changes. You’ll need to adapt Day 2 because the Douro Line doesn’t directly serve Lamego or the higher viewpoints.

What to Book Before You Go
You don’t need reservations for every stop. The main things to book ahead are your wine visit, river cruise and, if you’re staying overnight, accommodation.
Choose the quinta before building the rest of Day 1. A property close to Pinhão is easier to combine with the riverfront and a cruise, while more remote estates may require a car, taxi or arranged transfer.

A short cruise from Pinhão is the easiest fit for this itinerary because it leaves most of the day available for the village and a wine estate.
Check the departure point and return time before confirming a tasting.

Day 1 in Pinhão: River and Wine
Keep the first day around Pinhão. The station, riverfront and boat departures are close together, while several wine estates are only a short transfer away.
Visit Pinhão Station
Even if you aren’t arriving by train, go inside Pinhão railway station to see its azulejo panels. The scenes depict vineyard work, harvests, wine transport and Douro landscapes.
Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to look around the station and see the azulejo panels before making your way down to the riverfront.
Walk Along the Pinhão Riverfront
Head down to the Douro and spend some time by the water before your cruise. Walk along the riverfront and take in the vineyard-covered slopes across the valley.
For a cruise with a fixed departure time, get to the boarding point early enough to find the correct boat without rushing.
Take a Short Cruise on the Douro
Choose a one or two-hour cruise for this itinerary. You’ll see the terraced vineyards from the river while still having enough time for lunch and a wine estate later in the day.
Save longer cruises for a day when the river journey is the main activity. A shorter option works better with the rest of this route.
Stop for Lunch in Pinhão
Leave enough time between the cruise and your wine tasting for lunch. Eat in Pinhão or choose a restaurant at a nearby estate, depending on where you’ve booked your afternoon visit.
Check the drive or transfer time to the quinta before ordering, as rural roads can make short distances take longer than expected.
Visit a Wine Estate
Book one quinta for the afternoon rather than trying to squeeze several tastings into the same day. This gives you time for the cellar, vineyards or food experience included with your visit.
If nobody wants to drive after the tasting, arrange your transfer beforehand rather than relying on finding a taxi at a rural estate.
Add Casal de Loivos if Time Allows
Drive up to Casal de Loivos for views over Pinhão and the surrounding vineyard terraces if you still have enough time after your tasting.
Treat this as an optional stop. If the winery visit runs longer than expected, skip it rather than rushing through the end of the day.
Day 2 Along the N222, Régua and Lamego
Day 2 takes you farther through the valley, following the N222 from Pinhão towards Peso da Régua before continuing south to Lamego.
You won’t have as many fixed bookings today, which leaves more time for viewpoints and stops along the drive.
Drive the N222 Towards Peso da Régua
Follow the N222 west from Pinhão towards Peso da Régua. The road stays close to the Douro for much of the journey, with terraced vineyards rising above the river along the way.
Take your time on this stretch. Leave room for viewpoints and unplanned stops rather than driving straight through to Régua.
Explore Peso da Régua
Once you reach Régua, spend some time around the riverfront before you continue to Lamego. Stop for coffee, walk beside the Douro or visit the Museu do Douro.
If the museum isn’t part of your plans, you won’t need as much time in Régua. Enjoy the riverfront, take a break and continue to Lamego when you’re ready.
Visit the Museu do Douro
The Museu do Douro is worth a stop if you’d like to learn more about the wine region you’ve seen throughout the trip. Its exhibitions cover the history and culture of the Douro and the role of wine production in the region.
Allow around 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit. The museum also has a wine bar and terrace that overlooks the river if you’d like to stay a little longer.

Head to Lamego
From Régua, drive south to Lamego for the afternoon. The city offers a change from the river, vineyards and wine estates that make up much of the first part of this itinerary.
Walk through the historic centre before you visit Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, or go directly to the sanctuary if you’d prefer more time there.
Visit Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Head up to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, one of Lamego’s best-known landmarks.
Its long Baroque staircase climbs the hillside above the city and passes a series of terraces and viewpoints.
You can walk up from the city or drive to the top if you don’t want to tackle the full staircase. Allow around 1 to 2 hours for the sanctuary and steps. Add extra time for the historic centre if it’s also part of your plans.
Stop at São Leonardo da Galafura if You Have Time
If you still have time after Lamego, consider a stop at São Leonardo da Galafura for views across the Douro and surrounding mountains.
The viewpoint requires an extra detour, which makes it easy to skip if the rest of the day takes longer than expected. Allow around 30 minutes at the viewpoint itself, plus the drive there and back.
If You’re Short on Time
You don’t need to rush through booked experiences to stay on schedule. If either day takes longer than expected, adjust one of the optional stops instead.

Following This Itinerary Without a Car
You can follow most of Day 1 without a car. The Douro Line serves Pinhão, and the railway station, riverfront and cruise departure points are within walking distance of each other. Your wine estate may require a taxi or arranged transfer, depending on which quinta you choose.
Day 2 needs a few changes. You can take the train between Pinhão and Peso da Régua, but Lamego and São Leonardo da Galafura aren’t directly served by the Douro Line. You’ll need a taxi or another arranged transfer if you want to include them.
If you’d prefer not to arrange additional transport, spend longer in Régua or continue to another stop along the railway instead. Check the latest Douro Line timetable from CP before your trip, as services can change.
Take the Douro Historical Train in Summer
If your dates match the operating season, the Douro Historical Train can replace part of one day rather than become another activity to fit into an already full itinerary.
In 2026, the service runs between Régua and Tua from 6 June to 18 October on Saturdays, Sundays and selected Wednesdays. The return journey takes around three hours and includes a stop in Pinhão.
Don’t try to add the historical train to a day that already includes several major stops. Choose which parts of the regular itinerary you’re happy to leave out and plan the rest of the day around the train times.

Before You Go
Book your wine tasting and river cruise in advance, especially if you’re travelling during a busy period. These are the two reservations that need the most attention when you plan Day 1. Keep the rest of the itinerary flexible rather than fill every hour with a fixed stop.
On Day 2, give yourself enough time for the N222 and don’t worry if an unplanned stop changes your schedule. The museum and São Leonardo da Galafura are the easiest places to leave out if you decide you’d rather spend longer in Régua or Lamego.
